Dick Bader devoted half a century to a career as a teacher, an administrator and a coach. He also was an inspiration to thousands of young people in Central New York.

His parents were German immigrants and he grew up in Mattydale. As a student in the North Syracuse school system, he developed a passion for sports and was a three-sport athlete at North Syracuse. He earned his B.S. degree in physical instruction at Ithaca College and his M.S. degree and certification as a Director of Health and Physical Education from Syracuse University.

Bader’s teaching career began in 1956 at North Syracuse. In 1971, he was appointed Director of Physical Education for both North Syracuse and Cicero High Schools which merged into the C-NS District. He served in this capacity until 1992 when he became the Executive Director of Section III, a position he held until his retirement in 2006.

While at C-NS, he became one of the state's most versatile and successful coaches. He coached football, basketball and baseball. He enjoyed his greatest coaching success in baseball where his 1967 team won the Section III championship. His 1966-1967 teams posted 43-game win streak, which is a C-NS record.

Bader’s leadership roles have included: Onondaga League Baseball Chairman and President, Section III Vice-President and President, plus a number of other committee assignments.

Bader’s personal life has been as active as his professional work. He has received several awards for his activities with his church, his community and the Boy Scouts. He is an avid outdoors man and an excellent photographer. Many of his photos have been featured in state and Section III championship programs.
