Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame Announces

Class of 2014 Inductees

 

Syracuse, New York – June 25, 2014

The six new Class of 2014 Inductees into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Hall were announced today at a Press Conference at the Sports Hall of Fame Showcase at Drivers Village in Cicero, NY.  It was also announced that Tully’s Good Times would for the fourth consecutive year be the Presenting Sponsor for the 28th Annual Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony which will be taking place on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 7pm at Drumlins Country Club.  With the six new inductees, a total of 210 men and women will have been inducted into the GSSHOF since the first Induction Ceremony in 1987.  This year’s Inductees are:

 

Teresa “T” Cleland:  Dominant player in women’s amateur golf – locally, regionally, and nationally; 4 Syracuse District Women’s Golf Association titles; 5 Post Standard Women’s Amateur Golf crowns; 2-time New York State Golf Association Senior champion; 3 consecutive New York State Golf Association Mid-Am titles

 

Phil Gordon:  New York State Basketball Coaches, Section III Basketball, and Chittenango Athletics Halls of Fame; 411 wins as basketball head coach during 36 year high school career at Chittenango and Canastota High Schools; 8 Tri-Valley League titles; 2 Section III Class B crowns; 6-time Tri-Valley Coach of the year; teacher of the game

 

Mike Hart:  Onondaga Central High School and University of Michigan football star; led OCS to 3 state titles and 46-1 record; 4 national high school career marks (204 touchdowns, 47 consecutive and total 100 yard rushing games, 1246 points); 11,045 rushing yards in high school; set rushing records at Michigan with 1455 yards as freshman, 5040 yards in career; 3-time All-Big Ten selection; 3 seasons in NFL with Indianapolis Colts – played in Super Bowl XLIV

 

Father Billy Jones:  Parochial League basketball star at St. John the Evangelist during the 1950’s; point guard for the 1957 Parochial League playoff and 1958 Parochial League regular season and playoff champions; All-Parochial League performer in three sports – basketball, baseball, and golf; named as one of the top 20 Parochial League players of all time; first Parochial League player to be named as outstanding scholastic athlete by Italian American Athletic Club

 

Ger Schwedes:  Syracuse University football All-American; captain of 1959 Syracuse University National Champion Football Team; threw touchdown pass to Ernie Davis that set the stage for Cotton Bowl win to solidify claim to National Championship and scored a touchdown in the same game; National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete; first pick on AFL’s Boston Patriots in 1960 draft; Syracuse University Letterman of Distinction

 

Bob Snyder:  Honored sports journalist for the Syracuse Herald Journal/Post Standard known for “Snyde Remarks” column; sports writer for Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Street & Smith’s Baseball; author of two sports books; co-host of SU – Big East post-game basketball show on FOX TV; analyst on Syracuse University basketball radio network; ECAC Media Award for Outstanding Coverage of Eastern intercollegiate athletics; Syracuse Press Club Career Achievement Award
