Roy Simmons, Sr.

  • Born September 27, 1901, in Philadelphia, Roy Simmons attended Hydes Park High School in Chicago and Syracuse Universities, graduating in June 1925. In high school, Simmons played football, basketball, baseball and was on the track team. At Syracuse University, he played varsity football, organized the boxing team, and played varsity lacrosse. He was captain of the freshman football team in 1921, the varsity football team in 1924 and won the "Most Valuable Football Player Award" in 1924. Playing varsity lacrosse in 1924 and 1925, he played every minute of all games for both years that Syracuse was National Champions.

  • His coaching history included backfield coach at Syracuse immediately following graduation. Assistant to Ben Schwartzwalder when the Orange football team won the National Championship, 1959
  • Simmons who won two national titles as an All-America lacrosse player at Syracuse, became the Orangemen head coach in 1931. In his 39 years of coaching, he compiled a 253-130-1 record (.660) and coached 70 All-Americas and nine players now in the Lacrosse Hall of Fame. His 1957 squad featured All-Americas Roy Simmons Jr. and Jim Brown. Considered by many to be the greatest lacrosse player ever, Brown also won All-America honors in football at Syracuse and later was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame.

  • As varsity boxing coach, his team won 14 Eastern Championships.
  • In addition to coaching, Simmons has been a member of the NCAA Rules Committee on two occasions, while connected with the USILA
  • 1964 Inducted into the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame .
  • 1981: Received the Blind Men and Criers annual “Edward J Kearney Award” given to the individual who has given back to the Syracuse community.
  • 1990 Inducted into the US Lacrosse Upstate New York Chapter Hall of Fame.
  • Along with his son Roy Jr, the only father -son combination inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame
  • Syracuse University and Hobart College played one another for the Kraus-Simmons Trophy for each years. The game is named in honor of legendary SU coach Roy Simmons Sr. and Hobart Hall of Fame coach Babe Kraus.
  • Roy Simmons Sr. passed away in 1994.
