Bob Southworth was a catcher for Valley High School and played at Syracuse University before a foot injury ended his playing career. But Southworth achieved much more recognition as the first and only coach Corcoran High School has ever had.

Southworth, or “Southy” as he is called, was a social studies teacher at Corcoran and became the baseball coach in 1965. He has won more than 650 games in his four decades of coaching with only three losing seasons.

The forthright Southworth, who doesn’t mince words when it comes to coaching or talking baseball, has won 10 league titles and three Section III crowns. He coached a number of exceptional players that played in college and the pros including first baseman Jamie Dismuke, pitcher Greg Ferlenda, pitcher Bob Weismore and pitcher George Brown.

In addition to coaching, Southworth is the president of the Onondaga Senior Babe Ruth League and is heavily involved in Valley Babe Ruth. He has also served as the Section III baseball chairman.

Career highlights:

1952-1955: Played on the Valley High School baseball team as a catcher
1956-1957: Syracuse University baseball team. Injured foot forced him to end baseball career
1959: Graduated from Syracuse University
1965: Began coaching baseball at Corcoran High School; Won nine League Championships, three Section III titles
