For two decades, Bill Gerber was Syracuse’s winningest amateur golfer. Those years ran from 1961, when he played his way to the Onondaga Junior Championship, to 1981 when he last qualified for the British Amateur. In between, his victories on the links were numerous as he turned nearly every match into a trophy.

During Gerber’s formative golfing years, he won the Tucson Arizona City Amateur Championship, the Syracuse District Junior Championship, the Section III High School title and placed third at the State High School Championships.

Further along in his sensational career, Gerber added three Syracuse District Championships, two Craig Wood Amateur Championships in Lake Placid, three Syracuse Herald Amateurs and a variety of country club member-guests events. He qualified for the Canadian Amateur, British Amateur and French Amateur numerous times. He also qualified for the New York State Amateur an amazing 20 times, including 18 in a row. He was a medalist in this event four times. His two-round 142 in the 1971 Craig Wood stands as a record today.

Business commitments forced him to curtail his golfing activities in the early 1980's but Gerber still has a solid game and can break par with acceptable frequency.

Career highlights:

1961: Won the Tucson Arizona City Amateur Championship, the Syracuse District Junior Championship, the Section III High School title and placed third at the New York State Public High School Championship.

1971: Shot a two-round record of 142 in the Craig Wood

Accomplishments: Wins include the SDGA District Amateur (1965, '70, '73) and the Herald Amateur (1970, '73, '75). Played in four U.S. Amateurs, four British Amateurs and a Canadian Amateur. Finished 48th in the 1973 U.S. Amateur and advanced to the fourth round of the 1981 British Amateur. Finished second in the SDGA's Gerry Ashe Memorial three times (1973, '74, '75).
