Paul Gait Lacrosse Enshrined: 2006 Born: April 5, 1967 Victoria, British Columbia Record-setting Paul Gait revolutionized the sport of lacrosse en route to becoming a Syracuse University legend along with his identical twin brother Gary. Before arriving at SU, both excelled in school, in the Canadian Junior Lacrosse League and on the Canadian National team. In 1986, the Gait twins debuted at SU and the record books immediately started to take a beating. A starter in 1987, Paul Gait scored 14 points. As a sophomore, he made All-American and won the Brine Award as MVP of the NCAA Championship game with four goals and two assists against John Hopkins. It was Paul’s last-second goal in the semifinals against Penn that propelled the Orange into the title match. Gait had another All-American season in 1989 scoring 67 points and helping SU win a second straight NCAA title. In 1990, SU captured a third consecutive championship fueled by Gait’s 72 points including 10 in a game against Cornell. He earned a third straight All-American award. After college, the Gait brothers started playing in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League and shared the Rookie of the Year Award. The Gait brothers founded GBLax Company with their own line of lacrosse equipment, located in Syracuse. Throughout the decade, the Gaits played in the Western Lacrosse Association, the National Lacrosse League, and Major League Lacrosse. Paul starred for Detroit, Philadelphia, Rochester, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Washington, Long Island and again Washington. Paul retired after the 2002 NLL season. However, during the 2005 NLL season, Paul returned to the NLL to play for the Colorado Mammoth with his brother. He retired for good with Gary after the 2005 season. The National Lacrosse League hall of famer is fourth all-time on the NLL point total list with 712 points in 13 seasons.
