  • Nov. 21, 1926: Born in Syracuse. Family - brother of Ralph, Carman, Mike and John, all boxers. Grew up at 426 North Franklin Street
  • 1936: Dropped out of high school to become a boxer. Fought and won in Golden Gloves competition
  • 1945 -1955: Fought 91 bouts – won 74, 51 knockouts, lost 14 with 2 draws. Most fights at Fairgrounds Coliseum, MacArthur Stadium and War Memorial. Was largely responsible for making Syracuse a nationally known fight town. Fought as a middleweight. Tremendous energy, hard hitter and devastating puncher
  • 1947: Fought an incredible thirty fights that year, more than most of today boxers fight in a lifetime
  • 1948: Fought sixteen bouts, won ALL, 11 by KO
  • 1949: Fought Pete Mead on TV, broke Mead’s nose, opened three-inch gash over Mead’s eye but lost fight to Mead’s right hook, KO in 7th round. Redeemed himself in Rochester rematch by knocking out Mead in the seventh. Lost to Jake LaMotta by KO
  • 1950-1953: A highly ranked middleweight, Joey fought the best including champion-to-be Robert Villemain to whom he lost by KO in the ninth
  • 1953: Final fight a TV bought against Dick Wagner. Knocked Wagner down in the second. Wagner recovered to KO Joey in the fourth
