John Meehan

Inducted in 2001

A three sport athlete at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, John "Chick" Meehan joins the list of pre-World War II athletes who have been inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame. Chick competed in basketball, football and baseball. At CBA Chick was named All-City honors in basketball and football. His basketball and baseball career continued after CBA as he played for various professional teams in Syracuse, Homer, Newark, Auburn and Rochester. In 1939 - 1940, John played for the Syracuse Reds in the NYS Pro Basketball League.

In 1941, he received the Ohstrom Trophy as the top basketball player in Central New York. He joined the Syracuse Stars of the All-American Basketball League in 1945-1946. After his stint with the Stars, Chick joined the fledgling Syracuse Nationals of the National Basketball League for the 1946 – 1947 and 1947- 1948 seasons.

After his playing days, Meehan began a multi-sport coaching career at Rondoiut Valley Central School spanning the years of 1952 – 1978. In honor of his accomplishments, the school named its football field after him.
